Introduction to TYPO3
TYPO3 is a Content Management System (CMS) that allows those without any technical experience to edit their websites, intranets, and specific sections.
Content editing is a big responsibility that we aim to talk you through throughout these guides. There is more to consider than you might have possibly thought. Some are mandatory considerations to meet legal and accessibility requirements. Other considerations are more about how much control you have over the content and information on the page.
Once logged in, you will be greeted with TYPO3's Back-End which has:
- A user bar that runs along the top. This shows the site name and TYPO3 version you are currently running. On the right-hand side of that top bar, you will see your name. This is where you can go to update your account settings.
- The first column is the area that you are working on. The options in this first column can depend on the account you have been created and the permissions you require. You will always see Page, List, and Filelist.
- The second column will be your page or file tree depending on which view you are in on the first column. The pages or folders that you see in this second column will again depend on your permissions.
- The third column will show you the options you can perform within that section. The third column will depend on what you're trying to do and will change as you click to edit different sections.
Familiarising yourself with this now will help your other actions make more sense. It can feel a bit confusing at times when the page in front of you changes but always remember to work from left to right in a waterfall approach.

Now you know what TYPO3 looks like visually and how to navigate round it, read through our guides to learn about the specifics of how to edit using TYPO3.
